An Open Letter To Ambitious Young Bucks

Laydeez,

feel free to read this, but just now this one’s not specifically tailored to you, okay?

Onward.

An open letter to ambitious young bucks:

Young bucks, understand this: having a relationship is difficult at the best of times. Now add the fact that you’re an ambitious entrepreneur or business owner, well, that’s a whole new level of difficulty.

Having a significant other when you’re a highly driven business owner is like riding a bike.

Except the bike is on fire, you’re on fire and everything is on fire, and…

… You’re In Hell!

Alright, alright, maybe I’ve gone a tad overboard with the fire and brimstone imagery.

Let’s see if can’t dial it back a notch and paint a more realistic picture.

Here goes:

When others talk about date nights and romantic getaways, you’re too busy strategizing your next business move or extinguishing metaphorical fires to even consider such luxuries. Candlelit dinners turn into takeout at your desk, and quality time becomes an elusive unicorn you catch glimpses of between conference calls.

Listen, young man:

if you’re an ambitious entrepreneur or business owner, it’s gonna take…

… A Very Special Laydee!

Or a bunch of average ones (hat tip to Bill Hicks)

In all seriousness, if you want to get into a serious relationship, here’s some advice: be upfront with her. Tell her how about your workaholic tendencies. Tell her you love what you do and work is your number one priority. Tell her your time with her will be limited.

This is fair for both her and you.

It sets the tone right from the get-go. Be real and upfront with her.

Sure, she may have this romantic notion that you will change once you get to know her. But let’s face it, a woman changing an ambitious man is like a woman canceling a hair appointment – it never happens!

Now, are you currently in a relationship that’s not working?

Then perhaps the following story may help.

Canadian businessman, Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), was speaking to a bunch of up-and-coming entrepreneurs at some prestigious college.

At the end of O’Leary’s talk, a young man put up his hand and started waving it around like Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter.

This got O’Leary’s attention.

“Are you okay?”, asked O’Leary.

The young college student says: “Mr. O’Leary, I gotta ask you an important question.”

Here’s how that conversation went down:

O’Leary: What’s your question, young man?

College student: I’ve been running a business out of my dorm room for the last year and I’m about to graduate. It’s a cloud business that provides compliance software for hedge funds that have $250 million or less. I’m making about $5 million a year in free cash flow.

O’Leary: I don’t see a problem here. You haven’t even graduated, and you’ve got an outstanding business, and you’re doing it part-time!

College student: That’s not the problem. My fiance came to me today and said that she’s going to leave me.

O’Leary: Why!??

College student: Because I’m not spending any time with her family and her nephews. I don’t have time on weekends, I can’t go to her nephew’s soccer games with her. I just can’t because I’m so busy. O gotta keep my business going, I need to graduate with my degree. What do I do?

– The class is now so quiet you could hear an ant piss on cotton.

O’Leary: Wow. Okay, I’m not Dr. Phil but let me give you some advice here. Now listen carefully and answer me this: Which one is easier to replace? The girlfriend or the business? You’re making $5 million a year and every girl in this auditorium now knows this. I’m going to guess that if you can’t work this out with your girlfriend, you’re gonna do just fine. Listen, your girlfriend is obviously not the right one. If she’s not supportive of this journey you’re on, it’s not going to work. Find a girl who does support your journey.

So there you have it, my young brother.

Do with this what you will.

Your friend,

Kelvin
