Recently, I’ve been watching a TV series called Billions.
It’s basically about a U.S. attorney who tries to take down a billionaire hedge fund king named Bobby Axelrod.
It’s a real high-stakes “predator vs prey” type of show.
I love it.
Well anyway, in the last episode I watched, Bobby’s wife, Lara, tries her hand at big business. She has started a business in the healthcare space and wants to take her business to the next level, but she doesn’t want to use the family money. In other words, she wants to prove to her husband that she can succeed without his money.
Thus, she decides to go down the capital raise route.
She goes to her first capital raise meeting.
The meeting goes tits-up.
“Well, I tried to tell you,” Bobby says later. “You weren’t ready, but you wouldn’t hear it from me.” (Sounds like me talking to some of my subscribers)
Lara, who’s now gutted, asks why he feels that way.
Bobby pulls no punches in his reply.
Here’s what he tells her:
“What is it you do that you’re the best in the world at? You offer a service you didn’t invent, a formula you didn’t invent, a delivery method you didn’t invent. Nothing about what you do is patentable or a unique user experience. You haven’t identified an isolated market segment, haven’t truly branded your concept. You need me to go on?”
Now, this is where I normally segue into some type of sales or business lesson.
But not today.
Why?
Well, the way I see it, Bobby’s reply has more than enough food for thought. Look, if you can’t get any value from Bobby’s reply, you are probably beyond all hope.
But you’re not, are you?
No. I bet you’re already musing on the business truths Bobby (or more accurately, the screenwriter) so brilliantly articulated.
I know I am.
I’m out.

P.S. One of the most powerful (and simple) things I teach in my Email Playbook is the “ABG” secret to maximizing your email profits. This “ABG” secret is where most brick-and-mortar businesses completely fall down. Even online businesses are pitiful at this. Once you apply the “ABG” secret to your business, it’s only a matter of time before your sales will shoot through the roof.
