Dear subscriber,
There once was a poet named Kylie,
Whose limericks made people smiley…
She’d get to line four,
then walk out the door…
… because she really lost interest in whatever it was she was doing once her attention deficit disorder kicked in.
***
Hey, did you dig my limerick, or did you think it was lame?
Either way, I don’t give a dingo’s donger…. nor should you. The limerick was just a fun way to introduce today’s topic, namely:
Focus and Attention!
Now, while I’m no expert on ADHD, I do, however, own a white lab coat. In fact, I’m wearing it right now. Just stop and visualize that for a second. There, that will help make what I’m about to say next sound more credible.
Here it is:
It is my contention that if someone’s truly interested in a subject or activity, no matter how poor their focus is normally, they will have plenty of attention to give that something. You see, where interest is, focus follows.
Hey, you wouldn’t disagree with someone in a white lab coat, would you?
In all seriousness…
I submit to you, dear subscriber, that the REAL problem is not people’s lack of focus, but rather people’s misplaced focus. In other words, people tend to focus on the trivial. It’s like they’re rearranging their sock drawer while the house burns down around them. Misplaced focus, it’s a real thing.
Okay, so what area in life does this habit of misplaced focus hurt people the most?
Well, your guess is as good as mine.
But I’ll tell you this: one area where it affects them greatly is their skill sets, that’s assuming these unfocused souls have a skill.
Okay, here’s a fact: How skillful you become at your trade will largely be determined by how well you focus on the key areas of that skill or trade. You see, not all activities and knowledge are created equal. As the old business adage goes, approximately 80% of the outcomes come from 20% of our activities. I believe it was Vilfredo Pareto who discovered this spookily-accurate phenomenon.
Well anyhow, in every field, Pareto’s principle plays a significant role.
Let’s take copywriting for example.
Your ability to identify the 20 percent of copywriting activities and knowledge that will get you 80 of the results is everything.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), most copywriters get obsessed over the wrong stuff. Hear me now: you’re not gonna make sales by learning all the cool headlines, NLP, and other popular copy techniques any more than you’ll get girls by learning all the cool and clever pickup lines.
Nope. It’s the vital few things that make the difference, not the trivial many.
So, what are the vital few things a copywriter must know to get the sales coming in?
Gosh, I thought you’d never ask.
I have a resource that will give you the real meat-n-potatoes of copywriting. The vital few things that really move the needle. The stuff that if you get right, will bring you mucho dinero.
You can see this resource here: https://kelvindorsey.com/5-hour-copy-course/
It’s not how many copywriting techniques and tricks you know that count, it’s how well you master the fundaments that matter.
Don’t be a copywriting dilettante; master the fundamentals and get paid!
Your friend,
Kelvin
