Messy Communication

Dear subscriber,

Imagine the following scenario:

You’re on a road trip and you’re as hungry as a hostage.

You spot a doner kebab joint, so you pull over and waltz into the kebab joint like John Wayne entering the bar in Angel and The Bad Man (too far back?)

You give the owner a head nod and a “What’s up?”, and rattle off your order: chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheese with chili and barbecue sauce. By the way, that’s the correct ingredients for the perfect kebab.

Well anyway, the cook proceeds to prepare your kebab. He’s clean, the shop’s clean, and it all looks very professional, so your hopes are high.

After a short wait, the owner hands you your meaty treasure, you pay him, and you’re back on the road. You find a nice quiet spot to eat and you pull over. You start opening your kebab with great anticipation, but that quickly turns to utter surprise and disappointment because you realize there’s no bread, no wrap, nothing!

Just the ingredients, all sloshed together without any Turkish bread to hold them in place.

So, I ask you, dear subscriber, how does one eat a chicken kebab without any bread wrapping to hold it all together?

The answer, of course, is with great difficulty.

Okay, my friend, what you just read is not some pointless story. In fact, it is a marvelous, if not genius, analogy of how most people communicate.

I shall explain.

Most speakers/writers when they are giving their audience facts and information, are just like that half-wit kebab cook. In other words, they make what should be an enjoyable experience, a difficult and unpleasant experience.

I shall explain further.

Effective communication is like a good doner kebab. The ingredients or filler represent the facts and information you want to convey, and the Turkish bread wrapping represents the story that ties it all together. Without the bread (story), you’re left with a messy, unappetizing pile of meat and veggies that are hard to handle and digest. If you try to convey information without a compelling story to frame it, you’re gonna end up with a dry, boring pile of facts that nobody wants to consume.

But when you wrap those facts in a tantalizing story, suddenly everything becomes more than the sum of its parts. You’ve got a delicious, satisfying experience that your audience will love and remember.

Now, quick question:

Has your audience checked out of Hotel Content? Maybe they’re off seeing the sights or taking a nap, but one thing’s for sure: your messages aren’t keeping them engaged.

Well, fear not, my friend, this: https://kelvindorsey.com/mavericks-storyselling-secrets/   can help spice up your messages.

Best of all, it will help you sell your product or service.

And that, I’m sure you’ll agree, is the bottom line of it all.

Your friend,

Kelvin
