Today…
…Hey!
Come closer.
That’s better.
Now, today, I’m going to reveal unto you the secret to becoming an astonishingly good marketer and salesperson.
But first, I’m gonna talk football.
Nooo.
Not soccer. (Why would I talk about soccer?)
No. I’m going to be talking about good ol’ American football.
Now, I’m not gonna pretend I know a lot about this sport. I know as much about American football as Willie Nelson knows about American Tax laws.
And to be honest, I’d rather watch cottage cheese turn rancid than watch a game of NFL.
Then why are you choosing to talk about it, Kelvin?
Fair question.
Two words: Tom Brady.
Look, I’m not really a fan, however, I can’t deny greatness when I see it. And what this dude has accomplished in the sport is nothing short of legendary.
Well anyway, I recently read an incredibly insightful article about Tom Brady and his coach Bill Belichick. The article focused on the relationship between Belichick and his star quarterback; specifically, what they studied in the film room. If you’re not a sports fan, the film room is where they watch video footage of games to break down plays and to study their opponents.
Now, not only was this article insightful, but it also contained a tremendously powerful marketing and sales lesson.
Okay, I shall now give you a few excerpts from the article and then after each excerpt, I will give some commentary which will explain, ever so brilliantly, how it relates to you and your marketing, and, more importantly, how it can put more pretty pennies in your pockets, okay?
O.K.
Excerpt #1:
“But the moment he(Coach Belichick)flicked on the video machine, he switched his quarterbacks’ vision from looking at opposing defenses with an offensive player’s point of view to that of the defensive players themselves.
What Belichick taught Brady and the others in the room was to crawl in the heads of the men who would face them across the field. He showed them how to spot habits and tendencies and even insecurities. He made them see those men as those men saw themselves.”
Comments:
Most quarterbacks think like quarterbacks. It’s only natural. And that was the genius of coach Belichick; he got Brady (the quarterback) to think like a defensive player. This gave Tom Brady priceless intel on his opponents that few other quarterbacks possess. Because Brady knows how defensive players think, he can read and anticipate their moves more accurately than the average NFL quarterback.
Can you see the correlation between Belichick’s philosophy and marketing?
Well, put down your Budweiser and your chicken wings, Bubba, and I’ll tell you.
I gotta say, the parallel here is scary. You see, most marketers think like a “marketer”.
And this is their greatest weakness.
To be an effective marketer, you must stop thinking like a marketer and start thinking like a prospect. To borrow words from the article, you must start seeing things from your prospect’s point of view. You must crawl in the heads of your prospects to spot their habits and tendencies and even insecurities.
Amen.
Excerpt #2:
Because Brady already has such a detailed knowledge of the other team’s defenses, he can move the Patriots downfield with minimal effort.
In fact, Springs said, there were many times in his year with the Patriots when Brady didn’t practice or barely even came onto the field for a practice. Instead, Springs said, Brady knew so much about the coming opponent’s tendencies there was no need to go through the pantomime of the Patriots plays.
“Tom can just wait in the building holding a cigar and a glass of whiskey and be ready for that week’s game,”
This holds true for sales.
When you have a detailed knowledge of your market, you’ll be able to sell your product or service to them with minimal effort.
You can fill up your autoresponder with multiple emails full of potent sale copy, grab your favorite beverage, sit down in your lazy-boy and watch the sales come pouring in.
How sweet it is.
Alrighty, I better wrap this up.
You know, I was going to finish this email with a Tom Brady quote, but then I thought, why should I?
He never quotes any of my work!
I’m out.
